Chess in the Schools

Chess in the Schools is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the educational benefits of chess to New York City public school students. Through this partnership, our 3rd and 4th grade students receive weekly chess instruction from a trained Chess in the Schools instructor as part of their school day.

In addition to classroom instruction, P.S. 386 offers a weekly after-school Chess Club where students can deepen their skills, practice with peers, and participate in chess competitions throughout New York City.

This residency provides our students with a unique opportunity to engage in a challenging and rewarding activity that supports both academic growth and personal development.

NY Scores Soccer

New York Scores provides students with opportunities to participate in organized soccer while developing leadership and literacy skills. Through this partnership, P.S. 386 teachers are trained as coaches, leading students in soccer, poetry, and service-learning programming after school using the Literacy in Action curriculum.

Students participate in weekly practices and games, building teamwork, confidence, and healthy habits. Our P.S. 386 soccer team also has the opportunity to compete against other schools across New York City, strengthening school pride while developing skills both on and off the field.

Bronx Arts Ensemble

P.S. 386 partners with Bronx Arts Ensemble (BAE) to bring high-quality arts instruction to our students through weekly in-school residencies. Teaching artists lead engaging lessons in African drumming and Latin dance, allowing students to explore rhythm, movement, and cultural traditions through the performing arts.

BAE’s arts education curriculum integrates music, dance, visual arts, and theater while reflecting best practices in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRSE), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), 21st Century Learning Standards, and the NYC Department of Education’s Arts Education Standards. Through this partnership, students develop creativity, collaboration skills, and a deeper appreciation for global cultures.

Rising New York Road Runners

Rising New York Road Runners provide students with opportunities to stay active and build healthy habits through running. As part of our morning running program, students participate in regular training sessions that promote goal setting, perseverance, and physical fitness.

Students also have the opportunity to compete in NYRR youth track meets, where they represent P.S. 386 while building confidence, teamwork, and a love of running. Through this program, students develop lifelong habits around health, movement, and personal achievement.

Johnnie Mac Tennis Program

The Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP) provides our 1st and 2nd grade students with biweekly tennis instruction as part of their school day. Through the JMTP Community Program, students are introduced to the fundamentals of tennis while developing coordination, teamwork, and confidence.

Through its collaboration with SPORTIME, students benefit from instruction rooted in professional coaching practices and high-quality equipment. The program helps spark an early interest in tennis while promoting healthy activity and lifelong skills.
